Viewing Chinese Characters

Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 and newer can display Chinese characters.

To make Chinese characters display correctly in Internet Explorer try the following steps:

1. In Microsoft Windows enable Chinese text display.

  • Windows XP: Start menu -> Control Panel -> Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options -> Languages tab -> Install East Asian Languages -> Apply -> OK.
  • Windows 2000 Professional: Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Regional Options -> General tab, check Chinese. Insert your Windows 2000 Professional CD-ROM if requested.
  • Windows 95/98/NT4: Download and install Internet Explorer Chinese text support from in Microsoft's East Asian language support page. This is a free download.

2. If needed, set your browser to recognise Chinese language internet sites.

  • Windows users: Under "Tools - Options" on your browser's menu-bar add Chinese to the languages list.
  • Macintosh users: Under "Preferences - Languages" on your browser's menu-bar add Chinese to the languages list.

3. Set your browser's "Character Set" or "Encoding" to Chinese or UTF-8.

  • English pages will generally continue to display normally after making this change.
  • Encoding settings can be changed under the "View" option in your browser's menu-bar.
